Ondřej Bank (born October 27, 1980 in Zábřeh na Moravě ) is a former Czech ski racer . He celebrated his greatest successes in the combination . In this discipline he achieved two third places in the World Cup and, as the best result in a major event, fifth place at the 2011 World Cup . At the 2014 Winter Olympics , he also achieved fifth place in the giant slalom .

biography

Bank began his international career in December 1995 when he took part in the first FIS races at the age of 15 . In February 1996 he made his first podium and in January 1999 he celebrated his first victory in an FIS race. From 1998 to 2000 he also took part in the Junior World Championships , but only achieved 29th place in the 1999 slalom as the best result.

On January 9, 2001, Bank played his first World Cup race , the giant slalom of Adelboden , in which he was unable to qualify for the second round. A month later, at the 2001 World Championships in St. Anton am Arlberg , he surprisingly came sixth in the combination. He was also 26th in the giant slalom. Shortly afterwards, the Czech competed in his first European Cup race and in March he became the Czech slalom champion . By 2006, three more Czech championship titles each followed in slalom and giant slalom. In the 2001/02 season, Bank got his first European Cup points with 25th place in the slalom of Val Thorens , but in his only World Cup appearance this winter in the slalom of Kranjska Gora he did not make it to the second run. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , Bank failed in the second round of the combination slalom, and he also failed to cross the finish line in the special and giant slalom. His only result was 39th place in the downhill. In the 2002/03 season the Czech remained without a result in his three World Cup appearances. At the 2003 World Championships in St. Moritz , he reached 16th place in the combination as well as 37th in the downhill and 41st in the Super-G.

On January 11, 2004, Bank won his first World Cup points with 14th place in the Chamonix combination and three weeks later he finished eleventh in the Kitzbühel combination . In the winter of 2004/05 his only World Cup result was 17th in the giant slalom in Alta Badia , at the 2005 World Championships in Bormio he was 16th in the combined, 24th in the giant slalom and 26th in the Super-G. In the 2005/06 season , Bank was able to score in all three World Cup super combinations. He was 20th in Val-d'Isère , 21st in Wengen and 19th in Chamonix. The Czech proved that the combination is his strongest discipline at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . Here, as in the 2001 World Cup, he achieved sixth place in the combined and thus the best placement of a Czech ski racer at the Olympic Games since Peter Jurko 's fifth combined place in Calgary in 1988 . On November 30, 2006, Bank reached sixth place in the Super Combined by Beaver Creek in the World Cup. In December 2006 followed a 25th place in the super combination on the Reiteralm and in January 2007 the eleventh place in the slalom of Adelboden. In addition, he came in the slalom of Madesimo / Campodolcino for the first time in a European Cup race in the top three in March . At the 2007 World Championships he reached tenth place in the super combined and 17th place in the giant slalom as well as 35th place in the downhill and 36th place in the super-G. He also finished ninth in the team competition with his teammates.

His best result to date in the World Cup was achieved by Bank on November 29, 2007 in the super combination of Beaver Creek, when he was third behind the Swiss Daniel Albrecht and the French Jean-Baptiste Grange . This made him the first Czech in over 25 years to achieve a podium finish in the World Cup. Ivan Pacák had achieved the last up to then on January 24, 1982 with second place in the combination of Wengen. On January 15, 2008, Bank had a hard fall during the first downhill training on the Streif in Kitzbühel and suffered a double fracture of the lower leg. He had to end the season early and could not contest any races in the winter of 2008/09.

In the 2009/10 season , Bank was able to establish itself close to the world's best. His best World Cup result this winter was seventh place in the super combination of Wengen. He achieved the same placement at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games , also in the super combination. On March 14, 2010 he was part of the Czech team at the season finale in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , which surprisingly won the team competition in front of Switzerland and Austria , which is only part of the Nations Cup . Then he became Czech champion in all four disciplines. In the 2010/11 season to bank continued to increase. He drove in five World Cup races (three super combinations and one slalom and one giant slalom each) among the top ten and achieved fifth place in the giant slalom of Alta Badia as the best result. This made him 26th in the overall World Cup - he had never been in the top 50 before - as well as 14th in the giant slalom and seventh in the combined World Cup. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, he achieved fifth place in the super combined and thus his best ever World Cup result.

Due to a serious viral illness, Bank was unable to train for the entire summer of 2011. In the 2011/12 World Cup winter he was initially without a countable result until the season ended prematurely for him in mid-January due to a herniated disc . After five months of rehabilitation, he broke his jaw while training in Chile in September 2012 , after which he had to interrupt snow training for four weeks. At the end of November 2012, Bank injured his shoulder during the second training session for the World Cup downhill run in Beaver Creek, whereupon he had to pause for several weeks again. In the giant slalom of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games , Bank was sensationally in second place after the first round, but ultimately had to be satisfied with fifth place. He finished the super combination in seventh place, in the super G and in the downhill he finished 9th and 20th respectively.

On January 23, 2015, Bank reached his second World Cup podium with third place in the Kitzbühel Super Combined . At the 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail / Beaver Creek , he achieved his second-best World Championship result with 7th place in the downhill, and one day later he had a serious fall in the combined downhill just before the finish jump and lost consciousness. Except for bruises and abrasions and a slight concussion, he got off lightly. A photo of this fall by the Austrian photographer Christian Walgram brought him first prize at the World Press Photo Award . On February 22, 2016, Bank announced his resignation on Czech radio.
