The 36th Alpine World Ski Championships took place from January 29 to February 10, 2001 in St. Anton am Arlberg in Austria .

Choice of venue

The site was awarded the contract for this major event on May 11, 1996 during the 40th FIS Congress in Christchurch . Competitors were St. Moritz , Bormio and Lillehammer . In the first ballot, St. Anton was at the top with 35 votes, in the second with 43 - in the third the result was 64 versus 52 for St. Moritz

Worth mentioning

  • The first signs of Austria's application for one of the upcoming world championship dates came at the beginning of January 1995, whereby the ÖSV had named St. Anton for 2001 or 2003 without making any commitments. In a press conference, the President of the St. Anton Ski Club, Reinhard Hauser, specified that the 2001 World Championships or the 2006 Olympic Games were planned.
  • The "ski legend" Karl Schranz was one of the most important promoters for these world championships.
  • Due to all organizational measures, the station in St. Anton was completely relocated.
  • The World Championship logo was presented on December 28, 1996 by the ÖSV officials (President Peter Schröcksnadel and General Secretary Jo Schmied) in the Panhans hotel on the occasion of the women's slalom in Semmering; it was designed by Mag. Otto Reitmayr.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin , known as a friend of Karl Schranz, paid a visit to the world championships.
  • On February 9th, Anita Wachter organized an official farewell party as she resigned after these world championships.
  • According to a publication in the “Tiroler Tageszeitung” on February 2, 2002, St. Anton made a surplus of € 1.1 million from the World Cup.
