Urs Imboden (born January 7, 1975 in Santa Maria im Münstertal , Graubünden ) is a former Swiss ski racer . He specialized in the slalom discipline and started for the Republic of Moldova from 2006 to 2011 .

biography

Imboden began his career in the Swiss national team. On January 19, 1997 he made his debut in the World Cup , at the Lauberhorn Slalom in Wengen . He won his first World Cup points on January 28, 1998 with place 25 in Aspen . He achieved his best result on November 19, 2000 at the Park City slalom . Imboden was able to establish itself near the top of the world, but also had numerous failures. His greatest achievement was fifth place in slalom at the 2002 Winter Olympics . During the 2003 European Cup season , he was also fifth in the discipline classification.

As a result, Imboden's services decreased continuously. Swiss-Ski divided him into lower cadres and finally released him. He then, like his team-mate Christophe Roux , took on Moldovan citizenship and started for Moldova in the 2006/07 World Cup season . On January 30, 2007 Imboden was able to classify himself as a Moldovan among the top 30 for the first time, but missed World Cup points due to his large deficit. At the 2007 World Championships in Åre , he finished eleventh in slalom.

In the 2008/09 season, Imboden made a name for itself with consistent performances. Due to the occasional poor performance of his ex-colleagues in this discipline, the Swiss media reported regularly on the "retired" - but at the same time best - Swiss. The Moldovan ski team was usually referred to as a one-man team because, unlike other nations, it did not have several supervisors and coaches, but almost everything was taken over by the coach Hans Daniel Fahrner from Prad am Stilfserjoch . Imboden prepared the skis himself.

At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , Imboden finished ninth in slalom. In the World Cup, 14th place in the slalom in Kitzbühel on January 25, 2009 had been the best result since his change of nationality. By winning the European Cup slalom final on March 14, 2009, he was able to secure third place in the slalom classification, which was synonymous with his greatest success in the European Cup. On January 10, 2010 Imboden reached seventh place in the Adelboden slalom . This was his only top 10 result for Moldova and his second best ever World Cup result. The best result in the 2010/11 season was an eleventh place in Adelboden.

In April 2011 Imboden announced his retirement from top-class sport. He will work as a trainer at the sports high school in Davos .
