Stefan Stankalla (born April 12, 1975 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) is a former German ski racer . He was active in the Ski World Cup from 1994 to 2004, particularly in the Downhill and Super-G disciplines .
biography
After graduating from high school at Werdenfels-Gymnasium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and studying business administration at the University of Hagen , Stankalla was a sergeant in the sports promotion group of the German Armed Forces in Mittenwald .
Stankalla , who started for the Partenkirchen Ski Club, began his sporting career in Lake Placid by winning the giant slalom gold medal at the 1994 Junior World Championships . From March 1994 he started regularly in ski world cup races. But here he was never able to build on his success in the youth field. It took another three years to win the first World Cup points. Stankalla only made it into the top ten twice. Nevertheless, at the end of the 1990s he was one of the best downhill skiers of the German Ski Association . In January 2001 he finished ninth and fifth in a downhill race and a super-G in his birthplace on two consecutive days.
Stankalla is a two-time German champion in downhill and super-G. He won the two championship titles. In addition, he won eight silver and three bronze medals at German championships. These were divided into all four alpine disciplines of downhill, super G, giant slalom and slalom. He took part in the Alpine World Ski Championships four times: 1996 , 1999 , 2001 and 2003 . His best finish was in Vail in 1999, finishing 20th in the Super-G.
In April 2004, Stankalla retired from active ski racing. The reason he gave was the lack of motivation after a lack of success. Stankalla completed his studies with a degree in business administration at the end of September 2007 and then worked as head of marketing / communication on the organizing committee of the 2011 Alpine World Ski Championships .
