The Salzburg resident, who lives in Obertauern, joined the ÖSV team for the first time in 1990. His best season was 2000/01 , when he took his only World Cup victory in the first slalom of the season at Park City , finishing five second places. As a result, he reached 2nd place in the slalom ranking, 5th place in the giant slalom ranking and 6th place in the overall ranking. At the 2001 Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Anton am Arlberg , Schilchegger came in 6th place in the giant slalom and 4th place in the slalom.
On December 9, 2001, Schilchegger suffered a collateral ligament injury in the giant slalom of Val-d'Isère and fell out for the remainder of the 2001/02 season . In the following seasons Schilchegger was able to build on the earlier successes to a limited extent. He finished third on the podium twice. In 2002/03 he was fifth again in the giant slalom ranking, and in 2003/04 he was sixth.
At the beginning of the 2004/05 season, Schilchegger announced the end of his career.
