Špela Pretnar (born March 5, 1973 in Bled ) is a former Slovenian ski racer . During the 1990s she was one of the most successful athletes in the slalom and giant slalom disciplines, and she also achieved a podium finish in the Super-G . She celebrated her greatest success in the 1999/2000 season when she won the Slalom World Cup.
biography
Pretnar celebrated her first international successes at the Junior World Championship in Maribor in 1992 with the silver medal in the giant slalom and the bronze medal in combination. In the same year she also competed in the World Cup for the first time and achieved her first World Cup points in the giant slalom in Morzine in 17th place. In the following season 1992/93 she was able to place in the top ten and reached sixth place in the giant slalom and seventh place in the Super-G at the 1993 World Championships in Morioka . The following year she took part in the Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer and was eleventh in slalom and twelfth in giant slalom.
The 1994/95 season was one of their most successful. She won her first World Cup race, the giant slalom in Bormio on March 18, 1995, and made it onto the podium three more times (third in the Super-G in Flachau , second in the giant slalom in Maribor and third in the giant slalom in Cortina d'Ampezzo ). As a result, she was third in the Giant Slalom World Cup and seventh in the overall World Cup. She had to sit out the following season due to an injury, after which she could not immediately make contact with the world elite.
In the 1997/98 season she reached her first podium finishes in slalom with two third places. At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano , she was eliminated in both slalom and giant slalom. A year later, on February 23, 1999, she won her first World Cup slalom in Åre and finished seventh in the Slalom World Cup at the end of the season . At the 1999 World Championships in Vail , she was eighth in giant slalom and eliminated in slalom. The next season 1999/2000 was her most successful: she won four slalom races, reached two more podium places and thus secured herself the win of the slalom discipline ranking ahead of Christel Pascal . For this achievement she was awarded the Slovenian Sportswoman of the Year .
In the following season she struggled with many failures, including at the 2001 World Championships in St. Anton , where she did not finish in slalom and giant slalom. After that, she was rarely able to place in the top ten in the World Cup. Even at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the 2003 World Championships in St. Moritz , she could not keep up with the top runners and was eliminated.
After the 2002/03 season , she announced her retirement from ski racing. In March 2004 she took part again in the Slovenian championships and was eighth in the slalom.
After her skiing career, she worked a. a. as a sports reporter for the Slovenian commercial TV station "POP TV" - and currently she is the press officer of the Slovenian Ski Association (such as at the 2019 World Cup in Åre).
