The 9th Alpine World Ski Championships took place in Zakopane , Poland , from February 12th to 15th, 1939 .

history

After Austria was annexed to the German Reich in 1938, the former Austrian athletes could no longer represent their own country and were only allowed to start for the German Reich. The successes achieved by "Austrians" (Ostmarkers) during this period are still officially part of the German medal balance. Affected are the medals won by Josef Jennewein, Wilhelm Walch and Helga Gödl at the World Championships in 1939. (Hellmuth Lantschner was - like the entire Lantschner family - from Austria, more precisely from the Innsbruck area - but he was of his own free will Went to Germany in 1935 and started for the local ski association).
The subsequent World Championships in 1941 could still be held, but were not officially recognized by the FIS afterwards (at the 1946 Congress) due to the political situation in 1941 . No major events took place until the 1948 Winter Olympics.

Gunnar Stenfors from Finland was the only member of the Svenska Finlands Skidförbund to take part in the world championships. In Finland - as in Czechoslovakia and Austria , which no longer existed at the time - there were two ski associations officially approved by the FIS. The SFS was the ski association of the Swedish minority in Finland.
