The Kasprowy Wierch (Polish) or Kasprov vrch (Slovak) is a 1987 meter high mountain on the Polish-Slovak border on the main ridge of the Tatra Mountains in the Western Tatras . It is one of the four local mountains of Zakopane. Since 1936 there has been a cable car on the Polish side of the summit from the Zakopan district of Kuźnice to the summit, and since 1938 a meteorological and astronomical observation station. The Kasprowy Wierch is the most visited peak of the Western Tatras and the entire Tatras with up to 4,000 people per day per season. Due to its central location and good access by cable car, it is the most popular gateway to the High Tatras and Western Tatras .

Location and surroundings

Below the summit lie the Dolina Bystrej , Dolina Suchej Wody Gąsienicowej and Dolina Cicha valleys . The peak can be seen from Zakopane.

geology

The mountain consists mainly of sedimentary rocks , especially limestone and dolomites from the geological ages of the Triassic , Jurassic and Cretaceous .

etymology

The oldest sources also refer to the summit as Kasprowa Czuba , Stawiańska Czuba or Goryczkowiańska Czuba . The name Kasprowy Wierch comes from the Hala Kasprowa alpine pasture in the Dolina Kasprowa valley , which it towers above. Their name goes back to an unknown Góralen with the first or nickname Kasper , who had rights to the pasture in the 17th century. The Carpathian Germans therefore also called the mountain Kaspars Kogel.

history

Access to the summit was accelerated with the construction of the Kasprowy Wierch cable car in 1936. After the fire at the first meteorological and one astronomical observation station in 1936, the current station was built in 1938 by Aleksander Kodelski and Anna Kodelska . Since Poland was shifted to the west in 1945, it has been the highest building in the country; previously, the Biały Słoń station on Pop Iwan was the highest building in Poland in 2028. In 1959 a building was erected at the summit station that houses a small hotel, a kiosk, a bar, a restaurant, a waiting area with ski storage and a station for the TOPR mountain rescue service . A paved walkway was built from the building onto the Sucha Przełęcz mountain pass .

Since the construction of the cable car, Kasprowy Wierch has been visited by all the incumbent presidents of Poland: Ignacy Mościcki (1936), Lech Wałęsa (1992), Aleksander Kwaśniewski (1996), Lech Kaczyński (2008) and Bronisław Komorowski (2015) as well as the last exiled president Ryszard Kaczorowski (most recently 2003) and Pope John Paul II (most recently 1997).

First ascent

The summit has been visited by shepherds and hunters since the late Middle Ages. As early as 1850, hiking trails led from the Dolina Gąsienicowa and Dolina Goryczkowa valleys to the summit. The first winter ascent was made by the mountain guide Klemens Bachleda and the Polish historian Karol Potkański in 1890. During this time, the summit was mapped by them.

Flora and fauna

The tree line is around 1500 meters. The Kasprowy Wierch is a retreat for bears, chamois and marmots. It has been part of the Tatra National Park since 1954 .

tourism

The Kasprowy Wierch is very popular with hikers. In 1936 the Kasprowy Wierch cable car, which runs from the Zakopan district of Kuźnice, was built.

Routes to the summit

The following hiking trails lead to the main summit.

The Kondratowa Hut , Murowaniec Hut and the Kalatówki Mountain Hotel are suitable starting points for an ascent from the valleys .

Winter sports

The mountain has been very popular as a ski area since 1910. The Zakopane cable car opens up the Kasprowy Wierch ski area . There are two chairlifts Hala Goryczkowa and Hala Gąsienicowa on Kasprowy Wierch, which are put into operation in the winter season. The chairlifts were built in 1961/62 and 1967/68.
