Team competition

The Alpine Ski World Championship 2021 is the 46th Alpine Ski World Championship and will be held from February 8 to 21, 2021 in Cortina d'Ampezzo , Italy . There are 13 decisions on the program, six each for men and women as well as a mixed competition. Cortina d'Ampezzo is hosting the World Cup for the third time after 1932 and 1956 (as part of the Winter Olympics ). In addition, the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1941 , the results of which were canceled due to the conditions of participation in 1946, took place in Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Preparations

The Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) sold the marketing and television rights to Infront Sports & Media in November 2013 . Interested candidates had to submit the detailed application concept by September 1, 2015. The decision on the venue was made on June 9, 2016 on the occasion of the 50th FIS Congress in Cancún . After the Austrian Ski Association had decided to apply in 2023, the only remaining candidate, Cortina d'Ampezzo - who had previously been unsuccessful four times - was accepted.

On February 13, 2019, during the World Championships in Åre , the FIS Council decided to hold the controversial combination competition in Cortina as well and now also hold a parallel race for both men and women . This happened against the recommendation of the Alpine Executive Committee, which had spoken out in favor of deleting the combination. For the first time, thirteen competitions will take place in the Alpine region, six each for men and women, as well as the joint team competition , which has been held in a parallel format since the 2011 World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic

In view of the very high number of cases in Italy at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic , the Organizing Committee and the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano requested that the World Cup be postponed in May 2020. They were aiming for a date immediately after the 2022 Winter Olympics . However, after a conference call on July 2, 2020, the FIS Council decided to hold the World Cup at the originally planned time. On January 13, 2021, on the recommendation of the Scientific Expert Council, the Italian government decided that the event may only take place under strict conditions and without spectators. Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora stressed that "the participation of fans is too great a risk at this time"; the safety of the athletes and workers is guaranteed. Rigorous protective measures apply to prevent the virus from spreading. Four "bubbles" with as little interaction as possible, rapid antigen tests every three days, electronic access and movement controls, health questionnaires, mask requirements and temperature scans are planned.

Attendees

As a result of the Russian doping scandal (see McLaren Report and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi ), the WADA decision of December 2020 means that Russian athletes have to fly under a neutral flag (logo of the Russian National Olympic Committee on a white background) and under the country name “Russian Ski Federation “(RSF) ( Russian Ассоциация лыжных видов спорта России / Russian Ski Federation ). The suits may, however, have the correct country name. This regulation also applies to the other FIS World Championships that will be held in 2021. A similar regulation applied at the 2018 Winter Olympics (see Olympic Athletes from Russia ).

With a hundredth of a second behind the winner, this is the tightest outcome of a World Cup downhill. Florian Schieder had to be driven into the valley injured after a fall. Maxence Muzaton managed to land on skis after a fall at a speed of around 120 km / h. However, he was eliminated because of a missed goal. Romed Baumann slipped into the gang in the target area and pulled a bleeding wound on his face.
