Mowinckel competed in FIS races for the first time in November 2007 . She celebrated her first victory on January 3, 2009 at an FIS giant slalom in Oppdal . Already on November 26th, 2008 she made her debut in the European Cup at the giant slalom in Trysil , but was 49th but not able to get into the points. She made her first international appearance at the 2010 Junior World Championships in Les Planards , where she finished fifth in the combined ranking and ninth in the giant slalom.
She has been competing in the European Cup regularly since the 2010/2011 season and won her first points in this racing series on February 14, 2011 when she finished 13th in the giant slalom in Abetone . On January 3, 2012, Mowinckel made her debut in the World Cup at the slalom in Zagreb , but where she was eliminated in the first round. On the other hand, the 2012 Junior World Championships in Roccaraso, Italy , were successful for them . A fourth place in slalom was followed by the junior world championship title in giant slalom and the bronze medal in Super G. This also ensured Mowinckel a clear victory in the combined ranking. At the end of the season she won two Norwegian championship titles (giant slalom and slalom). She won her first World Cup points on December 7th, 2012 when she finished 16th in the Super Combined in St. Moritz . At the Junior World Championships 2013 she won the silver medal in the giant slalom and repeated her victory in the combination.
Her best World Cup placement to date was 8th place in the giant slalom in Beaver Creek on December 1, 2013. In 2014, Mowinckel was part of the Norwegian squad for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and, on February 10, 2014, she finished in her first Olympic race, the super combination, sixth place. On December 28, 2014, she increased her best World Cup result in the Kühtai giant slalom to fifth place. After a rather disappointing 2015/16 season with only one result among the top ten, Mowinckel showed improvement again in winter 2016/17 : On December 28, 2016, as fourth in the giant slalom on Semmering, she missed her first World Cup podium by just five hundredths of a second and reached at at the 2017 World Championship in St. Moritz as sixth in the Super G and tenth in the combination of two top ten placements.
Mowinckel finished third in the Super-G of Val-d'Isère on December 16, 2017 , which was synonymous with her first podium finish in a World Cup race. It was the first podium place for a Norwegian in Super-G since Ingeborg Helen Marken's victory in March 1996. The last podium place for a Norwegian in a speed race also came from Marken, a second place in the downhill at the 1999 World Cup final At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , Mowinckel won the silver medal in the giant slalom. It was the first medal of a Norwegian woman in Olympic alpine races since Laila Schou Nilsen in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936 . Her second silver medal followed in the downhill on February 21st.
On March 9, 2018, Mowinckel celebrated her first World Cup victory in the giant slalom in Ofterschwang . She is first after Marken, Andrine Flemmen (three giant slaloms), Trine Bakke (two slaloms), Nina Haver-Løseth (one slalom and one city event), Stina Hofgård Nilsen (one giant slalom) and Merete Fjeldavlie (one super-G) the sixth Norwegian to win a World Cup race - in the giant slalom it was the first Norwegian victory since October 26, 2002, when Flemmen took part in the triple ex-aequo first place in Sölden .
