biography

Laila Schou Nilsen was an extremely versatile athlete. After showing outstanding performances in Nordic skiing as a child , she initially concentrated on speed skating and in 1935 won the unofficial women's world championship at the Frogner Stadium . Since women's speed skating was not included in the program of the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , but alpine ski competitions were held for the first time, she began intensive ski training in the winter of 1935/36 and quickly made contact with the international top . After all, she won the bronze medal in combination at the 1936 Winter Games with the fastest time in downhill skiing. She was then awarded the Egebergs Ærespris as the youngest female athlete to date .

In the next few years Schou Nilsen was equally active in skiing and speed skating, and also began playing tennis. At the speed skating all-around world championships in Davos in 1937 and in Oslo in 1938 , she became world champion. In Davos she won all four distances and set four world records (500 m, 1000 m, 3000 m and 5000 m). The record over 500 m was only broken in 1955 by Tamara Rylova in Alma-Ata . She held the world record over 1500 m until 1950. At the Alpine World Ski Championships in Engelberg in 1938 , she was sixth in slalom, seventh in combination and eighth in downhill; a year later she achieved fifth place in the combination, seventh place in slalom and tenth place in the downhill at the 1939 World Ski Championships in Zakopane . In addition to her international success, she was also the Norwegian champion in speed skating in 1935, 1937, 1939 and 1940 and won ten Norwegian championship titles in alpine skiing from 1939 to 1948 and the Swiss championship title in downhill skiing in 1938 . In 1948 she again took part in the Winter Olympics in alpine skiing . In St. Moritz , Switzerland , she was seventh in the downhill, 13th in the combination and 14th in the slalom.

Schou Nilsen was active in tennis until 1961. In total, she won a Norwegian championship 85 times in this sport, including 23 singles and 28 doubles. She also won the Norwegian championship four times in handball and played twelve international matches for the Norwegian national handball team. She also took part in the Monte Carlo Rally four times . In addition to her sporting career, Schou Nilsen founded a company in the sporting goods industry after the Second World War. In the 1960s and 70s she was a sports official, including on the Norwegian Olympic Committee .
