Sylvia Burka (born May 4, 1954 in Winnipeg ) is a former Canadian cyclist and speed skater of Latvian origin.

Speed ​​skating

In 1973, Sylvia Burka was Junior World Champion in speed skating mini four-way in Assen . At the all-round world championships in Gjøvik in 1979 she won the world title and the following year in Alkmaar in the sprint. She also won bronze twice at World Championships. She set world records twice and track records numerous times . Sylvia Burka competed three times in speed skating at the Winter Olympics : 1972 , 1976 and 1980 . Her best placement was a fourth place over 1000 meters at the 1976 Games in Innsbruck .

Cycling

Burka was also successful as a cyclist: she was Canadian road racing champion three times, in 1977, 1978 and 1980; 1979 in the individual time trial . In 1978 and 1979 she was Canadian time trial and sprint champions on the track . In total, she won twelve national titles in various cycling disciplines.

Honors

In 1977 Sylvia Burka was honored with an induction into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame . In 1983 she was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame . She was voted Manitoba's “Sportswoman of the Year” six times and “Sportswoman of the Century” in 2000.

Private

Until the mid-1980s, Sylvia Burka was married to racing cyclist Jocelyn Lovell .
