Bonnie Blair (born March 18, 1964 in Cornwall , New York ) is a former American speed skater .

Career

Bonnie Blair is one of the most successful speed skaters in history with five gold medals at the Olympic Games.

Blair won gold over 500 meters and bronze over 1,000 meters at the 1988 Calgary Olympics . Four years later in Albertville , she won both the 500 and 1,000 meters. She was able to repeat this success in Lillehammer in 1994 . For the recent double success, Blair was named Athlete of the Year by Sports Illustrated magazine in the same year . She was also honored with the Associated Press Athlete of the Year award .

She was coached by former cyclist and triathlete John Howard .
