List of the most successful Winter Olympians
Since 1924 medals have been awarded at 23 Olympic Winter Games . The first Winter Olympics took place in Chamonix in 1924 , the last so far in 2018 in Pyeongchang , South Korea.
The most successful participant in the Winter Olympics so far is the Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjørgen . The most gold medals at a single host won the American speed skater Eric Heiden with five gold medals at the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid 1980 . Ole Einar Bjørndalen won four gold medals each in Salt Lake City in 2002 and the Soviet speed skater Lidija Pawlowna Skoblikowa in Innsbruck in 1964 .
