Winner of the Nations Cup at the Olympic Games
The following statistics show the winning nations at the Summer and Winter Olympics.
Depending on the counting method , it is the nations that have won the most gold medals or the most medals at all .
At the Summer Games in 1896, 1912, 1964 and 2008; as well as at the Winter Games in 1924, 1948, 1980, 1984, 1994, 2002 and 2010, the winning nations of both counting methods were not identical.
Twice there was a change of national winner after the end of the Olympic Games due to subsequent disqualifications.
- At the 1912 Summer Games in Stockholm , the USA were ahead in both counts, but the disqualification of Jim Thorpe caused them to lose the top spot in terms of medals to Sweden.
- At the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City , Germany was ahead in both counts. After the disqualification of Johann Mühlegg , who started for Spain, the top place after gold medals went to Norway because two of the gold medals initially awarded to Mühlegg went to second-placed Norwegians.
