(bornSpeed skating career
Martina Sáblíková grew up with her parents with her younger brother in Žďár nad Sázavou and starts for the NowiS team . At the age of eleven she began her sporting career as a basketball player with BK Žďár nad Sázavou . There she switched to speed skating, cycling and speed skating. She made her speed skating debut in November 2002 at the World Cup in Erfurt . In November 2006 she reached a place in the top three for the first time in a World Cup race in Heerenveen . In November 2005, she twice improved the junior world record over the 3,000 m, which is still in place today. In January 2007 Martina Sáblíková was surprisingly all-round European champion in Ritten, Italy with the number of points 162,954 (outdoor world record) and also improved the outdoor world record individual times over 3,000 and 5,000 meters. She also holds the world record for the 10,000 meter distance, which is rarely run by women.
In 2006, Sáblíková first took part in the Winter Olympics in Turin , where she competed on the two long distances. In both over 3,000 and 5,000 meters she missed the medal ranks, but in the 5,000 meter race she was less than a second behind Cindy Klassen's bronze medal in fourth . She finished the 3,000 meter competition in seventh place.
After Sáblíková had already competed at the speed skating single- distance world championships in 2004 and 2005 , but had less successful results there, she became world champion in the two long distances 3,000 and 5,000 meters in 2007 . A year later she was able to defend the 5,000 m title in Nagano , but had to hand over the 3,000 meters to Kristina Groves as fourth . Also at the 2009 World Cup , she managed to defend her title over 5,000 m.
At the all- around world championships Sáblíková did not have these successes, here she was able to achieve fifth place in both 2007 and 2008 . In addition, she was at the Junior World Championships in 2006, also in four-way, silver medalist. Sáblíková was only able to triumph in all- around competitions at European championships, here her title dates from 2007 , and in 2008 she won the bronze medal.
In the overall World Cup , Sáblíková achieved three victories in a row in the 3,000 / 5,000 meter World Cup, also over other distances, especially over the 1,500 meters, she achieved top 10 placements. In total, she achieved 13 World Cup victories, nine over 3,000 meters and four over 5,000 meters. The only podium finish that did not go over either of these two routes was a second place over 1,500 m. Over 1,000 meters you can only reach places close to the top ten in the B group. In the 500-meter distance she only started once in the World Cup and finished 49.
At times Sáblíková trained in the Berlin training group of her great role model Claudia Pechstein . However, when she had achieved a level of performance that brought her to the top of the world and thus also endangered German greats like Pechstein and Anni Friesinger , she had to leave this training group again.
At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, she won two gold medals over 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Sáblíková was unbeaten over the distance of 5,000 meters for three years, but was able to prevail against the second, Stephanie Beckert , with great difficulty with 48 hundredths of a second advantage.
