Emese Hunyady (born March 4, 1966 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian- Austrian speed skater who took part in six Olympic Games between 1984 and 2002 and became an Olympic champion in the 1500 m for Austria in 1994.

Career

As a child, she trained figure skating for six years and then switched to high-speed skating when she was 11.

Hunyady trained at the "Eisring Süd" in Vienna-Favoriten , immediately northeast of the water tower. The 400 m open-air speed skating oval was created around 1983 and was operated by Hunyady until the end of his career in 2002.

She competed for Hungary at the 1984 Winter Olympics , since 1988 after her marriage to the Austrian speed skater of Hungarian descent Thomas Németh in 1987 for Austria and was Austrian champion several times.

At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , she achieved bronze. In 1993 she won the overall rankings at the European Championships, in 2000 in 1500 m, she was world champion in 1994 and 1999.

At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , she won the gold over 1500 m and danced the waltz with the Austrian flag in hand. In addition, she won the silver medal over 3000 m.
She is still the only native Hungarian to win a gold medal at the Winter Games (as of November 2017). In 1994 she was voted Austria's Sportswoman of the Year .

At the 1998 Winter Olympics she was the flag bearer for the Austrian team. 2002 was her last participation.

At the age of 37, she quit competitive sports in 2003. She has been married to Timo Järvinen, a former Finnish speed skater and trainer, since 1993 - and Juhani Järvinen's daughter-in-law . The two have a son and have lived in Switzerland near Zurich since 2001 .
