Karin Kessow , married Karin Drbal (born January 8, 1954 in Rostock ) is a former German speed skater and current trainer. Her greatest success was the world championship title at the speed skating all- around championship in 1975 in Assen .

Career

Karin Kessow grew up in Rostock and began speed skating as a child at SG Dynamo Rostock-West. In 1970 she won the Children's and Youth Partakiade and was delegated to SC Dynamo Berlin . Here she first trained with Helga Haase . Since 1972 she has been trained by Joachim Franke . At the GDR championships in speed skating in 1972 , she reached 5th place in both 1,500 and 3,000 meters.

At the GDR championships in speed skating in 1974 she reached 4th place in both the sprint all- around and in the large all- around event, a year later 3rd place in the sprint all- around event and second in the large all- around event. At the speed skating all-around world championships in Assen, the Netherlands in 1975, she won the title in the all-round competition. It was the first of a total of 22 world championship titles for an athlete supervised by Joachim Franke.

At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck Karin Kessow reached 4th place over 3000 meters and 5th place over 1500 meters, at the World Championships in Gjøvik in the same year she came 7th in the all-round competition.

She then ended her active career and studied sports science. After completing her studies, she worked as a trainer for the next generation of speed skaters at SC Dynamo Berlin. She is married to Karl-Heinz Drbal, who was also a speed skater at SC Dynamo Berlin.

Karin Drbal works as a young state trainer for speed skating in Berlin.
