The 79th UCI Road World Championships were held from September 15 to 23, 2012 in the Dutch province of Limburg .

It was the sixth road cycling championship that took place in the Netherlands; Before that, the 1998 venue was Valkenburg aan de Geul , which is also in Limburg. The races in the single-road driving discipline also ran through Valkenburg in 2012 (see course below ).

Innovations

The competitions have undergone a number of changes.

After 1994, a team time trial was held for the first time again , the teams were made up of professional teams of six drivers each. The participation of the UCI ProTeams was mandatory. Further teams qualified according to the interim results of the UCI rankings on August 15, 2012: The first 20 European teams of the UCI Europe Tour , the first five American or Asian teams of the UCI America Tour or UCI Asia Tour and the first in each case were invited African or oceanic take part in the UCI Africa Tour or UCI Oceania Tour . In the women's race, the first 20 UCI women's teams in the UCI world rankings started by invitation .

The Junior Road World Championships, which have been held in a separate competition since 2004, were again held as part of the World Cup. The World Championships therefore lasted over a week, more than twice as long as in previous years. A rich supporting program was also planned, including an exhibition and a school race.

course

The course for the individual road races in the various categories (except for the juniors) consisted of a 100-kilometer route through the province of Limburg and a subsequent 16.5-kilometer lap near Valkenburg, which ended behind the Cauberg .

After winning the title in the team time trial on Sunday, Tony Martin won his second World Championship in 2012 on Wednesday, with which he repeated his victory from 2011. In rainy and windy weather, 58 drivers set out on the 44.6-kilometer route from Heerlen to Valkenburg, on which two climbs, the Bundersberg and the Cauberg, had to be overcome. With the Swiss Olympic champion of 2008 and four-time time trial world champion Fabian Cancellara and the British time trial Olympic champion of 2012 Bradley Wiggins , two favorites were missing, so that Martin initially only feared the Spaniard Alberto Contador, 2012 Vuelta winner, as the fiercest competitor. However, this quickly turned out to be unfounded, because after just 31 kilometers, Martin, who was the last to enter the race, had overtaken the Spaniard who had started two minutes before him. Instead, the 22-year-old US driver Taylor Phinney turned out to be the most stubborn opponent. In the first time measurement, he was four seconds faster than Martin at 14.3 kilometers. It was only after about 30 kilometers that the German was 14 seconds ahead of the U-23 world champion from 2010. Shortly before the finish, the lead had shrunk to eight seconds, and for Phinney hope came again when Martin struggled on the two inclines did. After all, the defending champion had a five-second lead over Phinney for another world championship. Martin's comment: “I had to give 110 percent, in the end I was completely exhausted. That was one of the toughest finals of my career. That was the first highlight of the season that I was able to go into in perfect shape. ”The two other German starters Patrick Gretsch (27th) and former world champion Bert Grabsch (36th) were disappointing.

Two days after winning the silver medal in the team time trial, 36-year-old Judith Arndt competed as the defending champion in the individual time trial on Tuesday afternoon. The race took place on a 24.3 kilometer circuit in Eijsden. As with the men, the female riders had to cope with the 1200 meter long ascent of the Cauberg before the finish line, but benefited from the tail wind. In the field of 42 starters, the Olympic champion Kristin Armstrong from the USA, the Olympic third Olga Zabelinskaya from Russia and the local hero Marianne Vos were missing . Judith Arndt entered the race as the undisputed favorite, as the defending champion as the last of the participants. With a speed of 44.6 km / h, she drove a superior best time and secured her fourth world championship title with a lead of 33 seconds over second-placed Evelyn Stevens from the United States. Ina-Yoko Teutenberg in sixth and Trixi Worrack in eighth rounded off the good result for the German women.
