Lieuwe Westra (born September 11, 1982 in Mûnein ) is a former Dutch cyclist .

Athletic career

Westra started his international career in 2006 with the KrolStonE Continental Team . His first victory in a stage race hors categorie came at the Tour de Picardie 2009 . In 2012 he won a stage near Paris-Nice for the Professional Continental Team Vacansoleil-DCM and thus his first race in the UCI WorldTour . In 2012 and 2013 he became the Dutch time trial champion.

Westra joined the UCI WorldTeam Astana in 2014 and won stages in the Tour of Catalonia and the Critérium du Dauphiné . On the cobblestone stage of the 2014 Tour de France , he was the most important helper of the future overall winner, Vincenzo Nibali, and was awarded the red number on his back . In 2016 he won the overall ranking of the Three Days of De Panne .

After cycling

In January 2017, Lieuwe Westra surprisingly announced the end of his sports career. As a reason for his resignation, he gave legal disputes with his manager and his ex-brother-in-law. The media speculated that Westra was suffering from depression .

In an interview with the Dutch television channel NOS in July 2017, Westra reported on his fight against severe depression. Attempts to stop his medication and race again have not been successful. He told Omrop Fryslân that he would emigrate to Australia in September 2017 and marry his girlfriend from there.

In his autobiography Die Bestie - das Radsportlerleben von Lieuwe Westra , which will be published in spring 2018, Westra confessed to having faked illnesses during his career in order to obtain special permits for the use of doping substances , in particular cortisone , through so-called therapeutic use exemptions . He denied the use of EPO or blood doping .

In 2019 Westra returned from Australia with his Australian wife and opened a hotel for cycle tourists in Calpe, Spain .
