Caleb Ewan (born July 11, 1994 in Sydney ) is an Australian cyclist who is active on the road and track . On the road, his main strengths are sprinting.

Athletic career

As a junior cyclist , Caleb Ewan, the son of a Korean mother and an Australian father, was primarily dedicated to track cycling . In 2011 he became Junior World Champion in the Omnium . In the same year he won three Australian junior championship titles, in the Omnium, in the points race and in the two-man team race (with Jackson Law ). In the team pursuit (with Law, Tirian McManus and Jack Beckinsale ) he took second place and third in the scratch . At the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games on the Isle of Man , he won three gold medals on the road , namely in road racing , in team competition and in time trial .

In 2012, at the age of 17, Ewan won two stages of the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic , an elite race, as the youngest rider in the field , and finished second overall. At the UCI Road World Championships in 2012 in Valkenburg , the Netherlands , Caleb Ewan was runner-up in the junior road racing world championship.

On October 21, 2013 Ewan signed a contract with the UCI WorldTeam Orica GreenEdge , which provided for a stagiaire from August 2014 and then the receipt of a professional contract. Until then he continued to drive for the Jayco-AIS World Tour Academy team. At the 2014 UCI Road World Championships , Ewan was again runner-up in road racing, this time in the U23 class.

For his new team, Caleb Ewan won two stages of the Herald Sun Tour in the sprint of the field at the start of the 2015 season in February . During the year he won the one-day race Vuelta a La Rioja , the overall ranking of the Tour de Korea and several sections of international stage races. His first victory in the UCI WorldTour came in the fifth stage of the Vuelta a España 2015 in the mass sprint ahead of John Degenkolb . After further sprint wins in races on international calendars during the 2016 season, Ewan crossed the finish line at the Cyclassics Hamburg in August as second in the sprint of the front field behind Nacer Bouhanni , who, however, was distanced due to Ewan's disability.

In 2017 he won four stages and the points classification at the Tour Down Under . In addition, he won one stage each on the Abu Dhabi Tour and the Tour of Poland and two stages in the Tour of Britain , and Ewan also won the 7th stage of the Giro d'Italia .

In 2018 Ewan won a stage at the Tour Down Under and won the Spanish one-day race Clásica de Almería . The following year, he won a total of nine stages in various tours, including three stages of the Tour de France , where he also won the last one in Paris . He also won the Brussels Cycling Classic . At the beginning of 2020, Ewan had a good start to the season with victory in two stages of the Tour Down Under and one stage of the UAE Tour , which, however, came to an abrupt end due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
