The 23rd Jayco Bay Cycling Classic took place from January 1st to 4th, 2012. The four- criteria cycle race began on Ritchie Boulevard on Geelong's east beach . The remaining stages led through the Geelong Botanical Gardens, in a new section through Portarlington and finally through Williamstown . Every day competitions for the men's elite and women's elite categories and, for the first time, additional races for replacement drivers and teams were held. On January 2nd there was also a competition for male and female U-17 drivers as part of the day section there. On the same day, Amy's Ride was also on the program, an event where fans could ride a certain distance together with the participating women's and men's teams of the Bay Cycling Classic in order to collect donations for the Amy Gillett Foundation . The name sponsor of the criterion series was the Australian caravan manufacturer Jayco .

The first ten riders on each stage received points, with the stage winner receiving twelve points and the stage tenth receiving another point. The rider with the highest total number of points after the fourth day was the overall winner of the Bay Cycling Classic.

In addition, there was also a team classification in each participant category, for which the points of the best three drivers of a team were added on each stage.

A separate sprint rating was announced for the men's elite and women's elite categories. The overall sprint winner was calculated from the points earned in the three (men) and two (women) intermediate sprints on each stage. In each intermediate sprint, the first placed received three points, the second two points and the third one more point.

Attendees

In the additional individual competition for men, over 100 drivers started, in the additional team competition eleven Australian teams of five drivers each started.

In the women's field there were ten teams with five female drivers and sixteen individual starters. The largest Australian women's team, GreenEdge-AIS, was among the participants . The defending champion was Rochelle Gilmore from the BikeExchange.com.au Dream Team.

Eleven teams of five drivers each took part in the men's category. For the newly founded Australian team GreenEdge , the first Australian ProTeam in the history of cycling, the Bay Cycling Classic 2012 was the first race ever. Matthew Goss , Robbie McEwen , Leigh Howard , Mitchell Docker and Wesley Sulzberger represented the professional team. Other professional cyclists such as Allan Davis , Baden Cooke (both Mitchelton Wines-Lowe Farms), Chris Sutton , Koen de Kort (both Urban Hotels), Heinrich Haussler (Bike Bug), Greg Henderson (Degani Bakery Cafe), Jos van Emden or Tom Leezer (both Rapido Cycles-Four Points Geelong) took part in the race. The Australian Continental team Genesys Wealth Advisers and a Japanese national team also took part.

19 boys and five girls registered for the U-17 juniors competition.

Stages

Every day began with the individual race of the substitute drivers, followed by the team competition of the additional teams. Then the women's race was started before the event ended with the men's race. On the second day, the Amy's Ride and the U-17 race took place before the start of the other competitions .
