Phenomenographic approach

The Phenomenographic Approach is an early childhood educational approach established by the Swedish scientist Ingrid Pramling Samuelsson at the end of the 20th century . It is part of educational constructivism .

Originally developed as a research tool, Pramling Samuelsson's theory aims to empirically capture the different ways in which different phenomena and aspects of the world are experienced by different people, as Marton and Booth already put it. Pramling Samuelsson calls the theory they developed together with Maj Asplund Carlsson also developmental pedagogy.

The focus of her theory is on the children's concepts and intuitive theories, which are made the starting point for pedagogically guided learning processes. In contrast to other educational concepts, it is less the learning content than the learning itself that is of central importance. Therefore, in the course of the learning process, the learning itself is reflected on and discussed. Based on everyday phenomena, the pedagogue directs the child's or children’s attention in the form of adaptive instruction to precisely those aspects of the child’s environment that are self-evident, thereby making the invisible visible .

The phenomenographic approach in practice

The phenomenographic approach is taught u. a. at the Evangelical University for Social Work Dresden (EHS) in the course of study in education and upbringing in childhood. At the University of Applied Science and Art Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen (HAWK) a model nativity scene has been created that works according to this approach.
