Matthew Harley Goss (born November 5, 1986 in Launceston ) is a retired Australian cyclist . His greatest career successes were the 2006 world championship in the team pursuit and victory at the classic Milan – Sanremo 2011 .
Career
Matthew Goss was a track cyclist in 2004 Junior World Champion in Team Pursuit and Madison . The following year he was the Australian team pursuit champion. At the track cycling world championships in 2005 he was third with the Australian team. At the 2006 World Track Championships in Bordeaux, she won the 2006 world title after finishing second at the Commonwealth Games .
Then Goss dedicated himself to road cycling . From 2006 he drove for the Continental Team SouthAustralia.com-AIS . Among other things, he was able to win the Gran Premio della Liberazione in the U23 class , as well as one stage each at the Baby Giro and at the Giro delle Regioni . At the Tour of Britain he took over the front runner jersey after the second stage. From 2007 he drove for the Danish UCI ProTeam CSC . His first victory in a UCI category 1 race was here on a stage of the Tour of Britain in 2007 .
From 2010 to the end of 2011, Matthew Goss drove for the HTC-Columbia team . At the 2010 Giro d'Italia , he scored his first stage victory on a three-week tour of the country . His greatest success on the road was when he became the first Australian to win the classic Milan – Sanremo in 2011 .
In 2012 he moved to the Australian team Orica-GreenEdge . This team won the 2012 Tirreno-Adriatico and the Tour de France 2013 , respectively, a team time trial . At the Giro d'Italia 2012 he won his second stage win overall at the Giro. In 2013 he won a stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico . For the 2015 season he moved to the South African team MTN-Qhubeka and in 2016 to the British ONE Pro Cycling team, but could no longer achieve any successes. After the 2016 season, he ended his career at the age of 29.
