The 2nd stage was therefore cut by around half, the start was moved from Squaw Valley to Nevada City. Therefore the total race distance was shortened to 949.2 km. After the first two flat sections, on the fourth stage, which was only 131 kilometers long, there was a mountain finish in San José (1st category). Before that, a mountain classification of the "hors catégorie" had already been passed with Mount Hamilton.

After the fifth, undulating stage, the traditional 24-kilometer individual time trial in Solvang was another preliminary decision about the overall victory, which had emerged at the latest after the following mountain finish on Mount Baldy (hors catégorie). The tour ended with a flat stage in Thousand Oaks .

The two also dominated the mountain finish on the penultimate day when they crossed the finish line together.

Peter Sagan from Liquigas-Cannondale , who won the hilly fifth stage and won the points classification, was also able to convince . While Jonathan Patrick McCarty secured the mountain classification, the German team NetApp was repeatedly represented in breakaway groups, which gave Jan Bárta the jersey of the most combative driver twice.
