Shortly after the start, four riders took off, including: Benjamin Wolfe (USA / Jely Belly) and Floris Gerts (Netherlands / BMC). However, this group did not come through and was given a maximum lead of around 2:30 minutes. In the end in Capitol Park , Marcel Kittel won the mass sprint ahead of world champion Peter Sagan and Kittel thus won the overall leader's yellow jersey.
There was a five-man top group with Toms Skujiņš (Latvia / Cannondale), Scott Thwaites (Great Britain / Dimension Data) and Daniel Jaramillo (Colombia / UnitedHealthcare). On the descent from the 1,274 meter high Mount Hamilton some riders like Skujins from the leading group and he had to give up the tour. The remaining outliers were caught and in the end he won Rafal Majka in the sprint against George Bennett at the motocross facility in San José. Majka became the leader of the tour.
The following drivers pulled away after the start and had a maximum advantage of 5:00 minutes: David Lozano (Spain / NovoNordisk), Federico Zurlo (Italy / Emirates), Danny Pate (USA / Rally), Benjamin Wolfe (USA / Jelly Belly) and Sean Bennett (USA / Jelly Belly). This group was caught up again before the finish and there was a mass sprint with a slightly uphill straight, where in the end the world champion Peter Sagan was the best. It was his 16th stage win on this tour.
The group of the day consisted of: Rob Britton (Canada / Rally), Evan Huffman (USA / Rally), Mathias Le Tournament (France / Cofidis), Lennard Hofstede (Netherlands / Sunweb) and Gavin Mannion (USA / UnitedHealthcare). The peloton around the sprinter teams around Kittel, Sagan, Kristoff and Degenkolb could no longer catch up with this group and so the outliers made up for themselves. In the sprint of this group, Evan Huffman prevailed in the end. The peloton followed, 13 seconds behind.
In the beginning, 15 riders from the peloton, including Peter Sagan (Slovakia / Bora), Nils Politt (Germany / Katusha), Rob Britton (Canada / Rally) and Peter Kennaugh (Great Britain / Sky), were able to gain a maximum advantage of 3: Drive out for 30 minutes. However, this group was gradually caught up again. Britton was the last driver to be placed a good 5.5 kilometers from the finish in the final climb to Mount San Antonio . Andrew Talansky attacked a good 4 kilometers and won the stage. Rafal Majka (Poland / Bora) continued to defend the yellow jersey .
The individual time trial on Big Bear Lake at 2,500 meters was won by neoprofi Jon Dibben (Great Britain / Sky). In the individual time trial, Rafal Majka lost 41 seconds to George Bennett , who was 6 seconds behind Majka before the time trial. So Bennett is the new leader in the overall standings. Majka is new second.
Five drivers separated from the peloton: David Lopez (Spain / Sky), Evan Huffman (USA / Rally), Nicolas Edet (France / Cofidis), Rob Britton (Canada / Rally) and Lachlan Morton (Australia / Dimension Data). This group made it to the finish line and won the stage at temperatures around 35 degrees Celsius. The strongest sprint driver in the end was Huffman. The next larger group around Bennett, Degenkolb and Sagan crossed the finish line 22 seconds behind. George Bennett defended the yellow jersey and won the California Tour.
