Tao Geoghegan Hart [ ˈteɪoʊ ˈɡeɪɡən ˈhɑːrt ] (born March 30, 1995 in London ) is a British cyclist .
Athletic career
In the junior division, Geoghegan Hart won the silver medal in the team pursuit of the European Track Championships in 2012 together with Jonathan Dibben , Samuel Lowe and Christopher Latham . The following year, after focusing on road cycling , he won the overall ranking of the Tour of Istria and the Giro della Lunigiana . He finished at the junior edition of Paris-Roubaix , Le Pavé de Roubaix , third.
In the adult area, Geoghegan Hart received a contract with the Bissell Development Team and came third in the U23 edition of Liège – Bastogne – Liège . In 2016 he became British U23 road champion and won the Trofeo Piva .
In 2017 Geoghegan Hart moved to Team Sky , for which he had already been a stagiaire at the end of the 2015 season . He decided the junior competition of the California Tour for himself. At the Tour of the Alps 2019 he won two stages in the sprint of the front field and a four-man leading group and came second in the overall standings. In the same year he finished 20th overall at the Vuelta a España .
Geoghegan Hart was the overall winner of the Giro d'Italia 2020 . After he had already won the mountain arrivals of the 15th and 20th stages , he took over the Maglia Rosa in the individual time trial of the last stage from the previously simultaneous Jai Hindley .
Miscellaneous
The unusual first name Tao and his first surname Geoghegan come from Irish Gaelic ; Tao stands for Tom . Before Geoghegan Hart started cycling, he played soccer and was a swimmer . At the age of 13 he took part in a swimming relay through the English Channel . He is in a relationship with the cyclist Hannah Barnes ; the couple lives in Andorra ( as of 2020 ).
