The Giro d'Italia 2020 was the 103rd edition of the Italian Grand Tour . The road bike race started with an individual time trial on October 3, 2020 in Monreale , Sicily , and ended with a time trial in Milan on October 25, 2020 .

Overall winner was Tao Geoghegan Hart ( Ineos Grenadiers ), who also won the 15th and 20th stages . Geoghegan Hart took over the Maglia Rosa in the time trial of the last stage from Jai Hindley ( Team Sunweb ) who was at the same time . Hindley, who won the 18th stage , was runner-up overall, 39 seconds behind his teammate Wilco Kelderman , who was 1:29 minutes behind. Geoghegan Hart and Hindley also took the first two places in the youth ranking .

The four-time stage winner ( 4th , 6th , 7th and 11th stage ) Arnaud Démare ( Groupama-FDJ ) won the points classification .

Ruben Guerreiro ( EF Pro Cycling ) won the mountain classification and the 9th stage .

Geoghegan Hart's team Ineos Grenadiers won the team championship and a total of seven stages. In addition to the two stage wins for the overall winner, there was the victory of Jhonathan Narvaez on stage 12 and four stage wins of Filippo Ganna ( 1st , 5th , 14th and 21st stage ), including all three time trials.

The Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec team was successful in two special prizes : Simon Pellaud won the intermediate sprint classification Traguardi Volanti and Mattia Bais the outlier classification Premio Fuga . Thomas De Gendt ( Lotto Soudal ) won the Combattività ("combative driver", a combination classification). Groupama-FDJ won the Fair Play Prize.

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic

The competition was originally supposed to start on May 9, 2020 with an individual time trial in Budapest . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic from the beginning of 2020, the start date of the race in March had been postponed to an unknown time later in the year. The city of Budapest had previously canceled the start in Hungary due to measures to prevent the spread of the pandemic . In mid-April 2020, the Union Cycliste Internationale and the organizers announced that the race would be postponed to October 3rd to 25th. The first three stages were held in Sicily instead of Hungary in accordance with the organizer's rescheduling .

Before the start of the 8th stage , the co-favorite Simon Yates ( Mitchelton-Scott ) had to give up the Giro d'Italia because he had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 after Covid-19 symptoms on the morning of the day . After the end of the 9th stage and on the following first day of rest , two drivers and six supervisors tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. Four supervisors belonged to Yates' team Mitchelton-Scott, which was withdrawn from the race according to the rules to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The Jumbo-Visma team took themselves out of the race after team captain Steven Kruijswijk's positive SARS-CoV-2 test . The teams Sunweb (positive: Michael Matthews ), Ag2r La Mondiale and Ineos Grenadiers (one supervisor each) stayed in the race. After it became known before the start of the 12th stage that 17 police officers from the Polizia Stradale had tested positive for Sars-Cov-2, the EF Pro Cycling team requested that the tour be stopped on the second day of rest. The Polizia Stradale announced that it was not a matter of police officers accompanying the tour, but of those who had accompanied the separate E-Giro .

On the second day of rest, an Astana Pro Teams supervisor tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, but not a cyclist.

According to the organizers' plans, the 20th stage should reach Sestriere via French soil and cross the passes Colle dell'Agnello , Col d'Izoard and Col de Montgenèvre . After this was banned by the French authorities during the current tour due to the measures taken to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in France , Sestriere was crossed three times instead.

route

After the start of the time trial in Palermo, there was a mountain arrival on Mount Etna on the third day . After another individual time trial on the 14th stage, the Alpine sections on the 17th, 18th and 20th stages were considered to be decisive for the overall standings, before another individual time trial was due at the end in Milan.

The 19th stage was shortened from 258 to 124.5 kilometers after driver protests.

Attendees

The 19 UCI WorldTeams were entitled and obliged to start . In addition, the organizer invited three Italian UCI ProTeams by means of wild cards with the teams Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec , Bardiani CSF Faizanè and Vini Zabù KTM , after the Total Direct Energy team, qualified due to its world ranking position , had waived its right to start. The teams consist of eight drivers each. Of the 176 who started, 133 reached the finish.

In the absence of last year's winner Richard Carapaz ( Ineos Grenadiers ), his teammate and winner of the Tour de France 2018 Geraint Thomas was named as a favorite. Also among the favorites are last year's second two-time Giro winner ( 2013 and 2016 ) Vincenzo Nibali ( Trek-Segafredo ), last year’s eighth Simon Yates ( Mitchelton-Scott ), who led the Giro d'Italia 2018 for a long time and the Vuelta a España 2018 won, Steven Kruijswijk ( Jumbo-Visma ), who lost the Maglia Rosa in 2016 after a fall and the winner of the Giro di Lombardia 2020 Jakob Fuglsang ( Astana Pro Team ), who is to be supported by last year's seventh Miguel Ángel López .

Regulations and prize money

The Trofeo senza Fine 2020

The race was carried out according to the regulations of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) for stage races. In accordance with this, the organizer RCS Sport established special regulations, from which the amount of the prize money (total amount approx. 1,500,000 euros) and the criteria for the award of the special ratings resulted (the overall rating and the team rating result from the UCI regulations ), as described below.

Stage categories and waiting period

The organizer divided the stages into five categories, which were important for the waiting period :

  • Category a: Stages without particular difficulty (6th, 7th, 11th and 19th stage) with a waiting period of between 7% for a winning speed below 40 km / h and 10% for a winning speed above 45 km / h,
  • Category b: Stages with low difficulty (4th and 13th stage) with a waiting period of between 9% at a winning speed below 37 km / h and 11% at a winning speed above 41 km / h,
  • Category c: stages of medium difficulty (2nd, 5th, 8th, 10th and 12th stage) with a waiting period between 11% at a winning speed below 35 km / h and 13% at a winning speed above 39 km / h,
  • Category d: Stages with high difficulty (3rd, 9th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th and 20th stage) with a waiting period of 16% at a winning speed of less than 30 km / h for stages over 150 km and 22nd % if the winning speed is over 34 km / h for stages under 150 km and
  • Category e: Time trial (1st, 14th and 21st stage) with a waiting period of 30% of the winning time.

The stage categories were also important for the scoring .

Stages

The first twenty riders of a stage received a total of 27,540 euros in prize money, including the stage winner 11,010 euros.

Overall rating

The leader of the overall standings wore the Maglia Rosa . As always in international stage races, the overall ranking was determined by adding up the times driven. In addition, there were 10, 6 and 4 seconds time bonuses on the stages - except for the time trial stages - and 3, 2 and 1 seconds on the second intermediate sprint of each stage (bonus sprint).

The overall winner received € 265,668, the second € 133,412 and the third € 68,801 (each from two pots of prize money). Prizes were awarded up to 20th place overall. The wearer of the Maglia Rosa received 2,000 euros a day.

Scoring

The leader of the points classification wore the Maglia Ciclamino . For this evaluation, points were awarded for the stage goals and the first intermediate sprint for each stage (point sprint) depending on the category of the stage according to the following scheme:

Stages
category 1. 2. 3. 4th 5. 6th 7th 8th. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13th 14th 15th

The daily winner of the points evaluation received 800 euros and the wearer of the Maglia Ciclamino 750 euros a day. The five best in the final ranking received between 10,000 and 3,000 euros.

Mountain scoring

The leader in the mountain classification wore the Maglia Azzurra . For this rating, points were awarded when crossing categorized climbs according to the following scheme:

category 1. 2. 3. 4th 5. 6th 7th 8th. 9.
Cima Coppi 50 30th 20th 14th 10 6th 4th 2 1

2 18th 8th 6th 4th 2 1
3 9 4th 2 1
4th 3 2 1

The daily winner of the mountain classification received 700 euros and the porter of the Maglia Azzurra 750 euros a day. The five best in the final ranking received a total of 15,000 euros, including the winner 5,000 euros.

Young talent evaluation

For drivers born after January 1, 1995, the junior ranking was awarded based on the overall ranking, the leader of which was awarded the Maglia Bianca .

The wearer of the Maglia Bianca received 750 euros a day. The five best in the final ranking will receive between 10,000 and 3,000 euros.

Team ranking

The team ranking was the result of adding up the times of day of the three best drivers in the team.

The winning team of the day received 500 euros. The five best in the final ranking received between 5,000 and 1,000 euros.

Special prices

There were also the following special prices:

  • Intermediate sprint evaluation (Traguardi Volanti) : On each stage (except time trial) the first five riders received 10, 6, 3, 2 and one point in the two intermediate sprints (scoring sprint and bonus sprint). The winner of a sprint received 500 euros, the overall winner 8,000 euros.
  • Outlier classification (Premio Fuga) : The winner was the driver who was active in breakaway groups the longest (in a group of a maximum of ten drivers) in the entire race. The daily winner received 150 euros, the overall winner 4,000 euros.
  • Most combative driver (Combattività) : At the finish, the intermediate sprints and every mountain classification, points were awarded for this classification. The number of counters did not correspond to the points otherwise awarded there. The daily winner received 300 euros, the overall winner 4,000 euros.
  • Fair play rating: The basis for this team rating was a points system in which the aim was to collect as few points as possible. For example, a fine was converted into one penalty point for every 10 Swiss francs, time penalties yielded two points per second, a downgrading 100 points and a positive doping test 2,000 points. The winning team received 5,000 euros.
