Michael Amann (born February 25, 1964 in Dornbirn ) is an Austrian composer .

Life

Michael Amann grew up as the youngest of five children of the middle school teacher Meinrad Amann, a brother of the composer Gerold Amann, in Rankweil . After his first musical impressions at home and in the children's choir, he learned from 1977 to 1984 at the Vorarlberg State Conservatory in Feldkirch trombone with Josef Amann trombone as well as composition and composition with Robert Nessler. 1979–1984 he attended the Feldkirch high school for music. During this time, his pieces were performed at concerts at the Musikgymnasium, at the Forum for Contemporary Music in Feldkirch and at events organized by the Austrian Association of Composers. Resident in Vienna since 1984 , he completed a teaching degree in music education with a focus on composition with Heinz Kratochwil and Herbert Tachezi from 1986–1991 at what was then the University of Music and Performing Arts (Diploma thesis Timelines in New Music - The organization of time in some Styles of music after 1945 , 1990); He also studied English and American studies at the University of Vienna . From 1990–1995 a diploma course in composition ( Iván Eröd ) and composition ( Erich Urbanner ) followed at the music academy . After completing his civil service in Vorarlberg, he began teaching in 1991 as a music teacher at Viennese grammar schools.

Amann's compositions have been spreading beyond Vorarlberg since the early 1990s, initially mainly in performances by the association for the presentation of new Austrian music "Music on Line", later also at various festivals ( Wien Modern , Klangbogen Wien , audio courses, Bludenzer Tage contemporary music , Bregenz Festival, etc.). In 1998 the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation presented its Fantasy for Ensemble at the annual International Rostrum of Composers in Paris. Amann was composer-in-residence at the Composers' Forum in Mittersill in 1999 and at the Vienna University of Music and Art from 2004–2005 .
