Giro d'Italia 1998
The 81st Giro d'Italia was held in 22 stages from May 16 to June 7, 1998 and won by Marco Pantani from Cesen .
The tour was dominated up to the 16th stage by Alex Zülle , who lost his lead on the mountainous 17th stage and collapsed completely on the following day. Pantani took over the lead, which he was able to expand on the mountain finish of the 19th stage so that he could defend it in the individual time trial of the 21st stage against Pavel Tonkov .
