The 79th Giro d'Italia was held from May 18 to June 9, 1996 in 22 stages.

Overall winner was the Russian Pavel Tonkov , who took over the Maglia Rosa with a victory on the 13th stage, a mountain finish on the Prato Nevoso . In the individual time trial of the 19th stage he lost over a minute to Abraham Olano , who took over the overall lead on the following mountain stage. On the 20th stage to Aprica , however, Olana already lost contact with the leading group on the climb to Mortirolo about 40 kilometers before the finish, so that Tonkov regained the lead as second of the day.
