The 87th Giro d'Italia took place from May 8th to 30th, 2004 . It consisted of a prologue and 20 stages with a total length of 3435 kilometers. The Giro was endowed with around 1,330,000 euros, of which the overall winner received a good 185,000 euros.
In addition to the prologue in Genoa , there was only one other individual time trial . Three mountain arrivals and further difficult mountain stages made the Giro 2004 a Giro for climbing specialists. The highest point (called Cima Coppi , named after the legendary racing driver Fausto Coppi ) of the Giro was the Passo di Gavia with 2618 m. The Falzarego Pass (16th stage) and the Mortirolo on the penultimate stage were also in profile . During the 14th and 15th stages, the Giro made a detour to Slovenia and Croatia .
The overall ranking was surprisingly won by the 22-year-old Damiano Cunego from Team Saeco , who was actually used as a helper for defending champion Gilberto Simoni . The Maglia Rosa changed several times during the race. It wasn't until the 16th stage that Cunego made the preliminary decision with his victory on a difficult stage in the Dolomites.
Italy's sprint star Alessandro Petacchi ( Fassa Bortolo ) won nine of the twenty stages and also picked up the jersey of the best on points . Fabian Wegmann ( Team Gerolsteiner ) surprisingly won the jersey of the best climber . Also Olaf Pollack had a personal sense of achievement. After the first stage he secured the overall lead for one day because of the time bonus of 12 seconds that he received for second place in the daily standings. Jens Heppner was the last German to do this in 2002.
The emotional highlight of the tour was the 11th stage, which ended in Cesena, the home of Marco Pantani , who died on February 14, 2004.
