Porretta Terme ( Emilian : Puratta ) is a fraction and municipal seat of the Italian community ( comune ) Alto Reno Terme in the metropolitan city of Bologna , Emilia-Romagna region . Porretta is known as a health resort and holiday resort because of its hot bath .

geography

Porretta is located in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines in the Reno Valley at 349  m slm , at the confluence of its left-hand tributary, the Rio Maggiore . To the right of the river runs the railway line that separates the left-hand Porretta from Berzantina, which administratively belongs to Castel di Casio .

history

The history of the thermal baths of Porretta goes back to antiquity : the famous marble mask depicting the face of a lion and which has now become the symbol of the thermal baths of Porretta was found in the Rio Maggiore in 1888 and is believed to date from the first century AD From the 12th century Porretta and its thermal baths are mentioned in many documents, and from the end of the 14th century interest in the baths grows, especially in the political milieu of the city of Bologna .

The construction of the first community hostels goes back to this time and the present-day village gradually emerges and takes the name of Bagni della Porretta (Bad Porretta). The legend of the exhausted ox also dates from this period : an exhausted and sick ox, abandoned by its shepherd, soothed its thirst at the source of Monte Sassocardo and returned to its stable completely healthy. From now on the healing water was rediscovered and the ox that drinks at the water source was raised to the municipal coat of arms.

In the 15th and 16th centuries the interest of the Italian rulers and princes of Rinascimento in the thermal baths of Porretta grew . The fame of Porretta and its thermal baths for the cure of female sterility was so widespread that the famous Prato trader , Francesco Datini , wrote a few lines about it in 1387, which he quoted in his collections of letters. Also Niccolò Machiavelli mentioned Porretta in his play La Mandragola (first curtain, Second scene).

During the Second World War, Porretta found herself near the front of the Goths in the winter of 1944 ; Partisans were active in the area.

The former municipal coat of arms

On January 1, 2016, Porretta merged with the municipality of Granaglione to form the new municipality of Alto Reno Terme. The districts of Corvella, Capugnano and Castelluccio also belonged to the municipality of Porretta Terme. Neighboring communities were Castel di Casio , Gaggio Montano , Granaglione, Lizzano in Belvedere and Pistoia (PT).

traffic

Porretta is located on the old railroad ( Porrettana line ) from Bologna via Pistoia to Florence . However, after the construction of the Bologna – Florence line in the 1930s, the line lost its importance and is now only used for regional traffic.
