history

The area of Lizzano in Belvedere has been inhabited continuously since the Stone Age, as proven by numerous archaeological finds. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Exarchate of Ravenna , which was conquered in 751 by the Longobard king Aistulf . Aistulf gave the area of Lizzano to the Abbey of Nonantola . The name Massa Lizano appears for the first time in the deed of gift from 753 . As a result, Lizzano came to the Free Commune of Bologna , which expanded the place into a border fortress against Tuscany . In 1227 the Castello di Belvedere was built, of which only ruins are left today. Together with Bologna Lizzano came in 1506 to the Papal States .

During the Second World War , Lizzano and its surroundings were shaped by the fighting between partisans of the Resistance and the German Wehrmacht .
