Sasso Marconi is a municipality with 14,953 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bologna . Guglielmo Marconi's local Villa Marconi has been the summer residence of the industrialist family since the 18th century.

Naming

The name of the village is composed of Sasso della Glosina , a rock face from the Contrafforte pliocenico ( stone pillar of the Pliocene ) that dominates the valley at the confluence of the Reno and Setta, and the surname of Guglielmo Marconi, the famous scientist and entrepreneur. In the past, the area was also known as Praduro ( hard meadow ) and Sasso ( rock ).

The municipality of Sasso Marconi is located in the low hilly area around the city of Bologna between the lower Reno valley and the lower catchment area of ​​the river Setta in the south-east and part of the catchment area of ​​the river Lavino in the west. The districts are located along the road called Porrettana , an important local artery between the Po Valley and Tuscany and next to the railway line of the same name that runs along the road. It is one of the eight communities that are members of the Comunità Montana Cinque Valli Bolognesi (German: Mountain Community of the Five Valleys of Bologna ).

The municipality is connected to the city of Bologna, 17 km away, by the Bologna-Pistoia local train . The railway line was founded in 1864. There is also a bus connection. There are three railway stops in the municipality: Borgonuovo, Pontecchio Marconi and Sasso Marconi. Another important traffic artery is the A1 motorway between Milan and Rome, which connects the municipality via the Sasso Marconi exit.

Villa Griffone, Marconi Memorial and Museum

The Villa Griffone near Pontecchio had been the summer residence of the Marconi family since the mid-19th century. The world-famous scientist Guglielmo Marconi also spent part of his youth here and carried out his first radio-technical experiments from 1895. The building, known today as Villa Marconi, now houses the Museum Marconi , the foundation of the Fondazione Guglielmo Marconi and the mausoleum, which was inaugurated in 1941.
