San Giorgio di Piano is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 9035 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bologna in Emilia-Romagna . The municipality is located about 16 kilometers north-northeast of Bologna and about 28 kilometers southwest of Ferrara .

The history of the municipality goes back well into the Middle Ages. The Castello sancti Georgii is mentioned as early as 947 among the Ottonians .

Economy and Transport

South of the village is the Interporto di Bologna , to the east the A13 autostrada runs from Bologna to Padua . There is also a train station on the Padua – Bologna railway line .
