Castel Maggiore is an Italian municipality with 18,622 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bologna . It is 9 km north of the provincial capital of Bologna .

history

The first documents that mention the municipality date from the 10th century. At that time the municipality was called Castaniolo (small sweet chestnut tree). Legend has it that the name goes back to a large trunk of chestnuts that was washed into the municipality through the Canale Navile (a navigable canal). Castaniolo was later given the nickname Maggiore to distinguish it from a town of the same name in the municipality of Bentivoglio .

The place was renamed Castel Maggiore in 1818 by the Papal States to which it belonged at the time .

During the Second World War , the municipality was exposed to heavy bomber attacks several times due to its location on the Padua – Bologna railway line .
