Medicina is an Italian municipality with 16,835 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bologna .

The origin of the name is unknown ( Medicina is the Italian word for “medicine” and for science “medicine”) which has long been speculated about. Legend has it that Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa fell ill while driving through Medicina from Milan and then miraculously recovered from a snake that accidentally sneaked into the saucepan of his soup. However, it has been proven that the name comes from an even older era than Barbarossa, although the emperor was actually staying in the place. To commemorate this legend, the Festa del Barbarossa is celebrated every September .

At Medicina (in the village of Fiorentina) there is a radio telescope measuring 32 meters . It is directed by the Istituto di Radioastronomia di Bologna and was set up by the CNR , now a member of INAF .
