history

The main town is of Roman origin. The name comes from the Latin castellum , a diminutive of castrum (military area), whose existence was only attested shortly after the year 1000. Until the 19th century, its name was accompanied by the name Dei Gatti : the assumptions about the meaning can be traced back to an old name for the word forest ( Celtic gatt and Longobard gauta ).

The current name dei Pepoli comes from a royal decree of 1830 in which the noble family house of Bologna was named the Pepoli . For a long time the area belonged to the Count Albertis from Prato and Mangona. Because of the repeated and violent attacks by the nearby cities of Bologna and Florence , which the Albertis could not repel, the whole area was handed over by the Albertis to the Pepolis of Bologna in 1340.

Actually, Bologna and then Florence ruled the municipality until the middle of the 15th century. The feudal power of the Pepoli lasted until the Napoleonic era, when they swore by the republic. Shortly afterwards (1797) feudalism was abolished and the district was incorporated into the Cispadan Republic . In 1810 it was under the administration of Vergato and then it followed the events of Napoleon up to the Congress of Vienna , after which it was added to the Papal States.

In 1859 the community came to the Kingdom of Italy .
