Casalecchio di Reno is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Bologna with 36,685 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The municipality has an area of 17.37 km² and is therefore one of the smallest in the province.
geography
The area around Casalecchio di Reno is rather flat to slightly hilly. The town, through which the Reno flows, lies at the foot of the Colle della Guardia (Eng. Hill of the Guard ), on which the pilgrimage church of Santuario della Madonna di San Luca is located.
In addition to the Reno, there are several smaller watercourses in the municipality:
- the Rio Bolsenda , which rises in the district of Nugareto ,
- the Rio dell'Asino (dt. Eselsbach ), which flows down from the hill Monte Capra ,
- the Rio Ceretolo , which has its source near Tizzano ,
- the Rio della Pizzacchera , which has its source at the sanctuary.
Caselecchio has a predominantly continental climate with rain, fog and snow in winter and humid heat in summer.
The city borders three municipalities:
- Sasso Marconi in the south,
- Bologna to the northeast and
- Zola Predosa in the west.
The municipal area has remained unchanged with its 1,737 hectares since 1828 and is divided into the four districts of Capoluogo , Ceretolo , Tizzano and Croce .
history
The place name Casalecchio goes back to the Roman word Casaliculum , which means something like "hamlet". Human traces can be traced back to the Paleolithic . The Romans also left their traces (water pipes) in the city. During the mass migrations , the town on a consular road was depopulated and the inhabitants moved to the mountains.
Around the year 1000 Casalecchio was changed with the construction of the lock, the canal and the extension of the bridge over the Reno. Castles, palaces and fortresses were also built. During the inter-party battles in Bologna , the city was often sacked and used as a battlefield for armed conflict.
From the second half of the 19th century, the city experienced an economic boom during the industrial revolution . Villas, churches and manors were built, but many of them were destroyed during the two world wars, as the city was badly affected by air raids, especially during World War II . For example, on April 18, 1945, the Villa Sampieri Talon was blown up by a bomb. The stately building was probably designed by Giuseppe Carlo Rossi and Ferdinando Galli da Bibiena . Gioacchino Rossi and Gaetano Donizetti were frequent guests of the house, as was the French writer Stendhal from 1816–1817 . The villa served the 22nd Flak Brigade during World War II . On behalf of the Nazi occupying power, a local construction company built an air raid shelter in addition to several mobile anti-aircraft positions. Several other air raid shelters were spread across the city. Today a left wing of the former pleasure palace still reminds of the devastation of the war. It is located in today's Parco della Chiusa . The civilian population was hardest hit: of the 2,813 families who lived in Casalecchio di Reno before the war, 2,728 were homeless at the end of the war and over 4,000 of the 9,141 residents who lived in the city in 1940 had had to leave the place .
Casalecchio recorded a much higher population increase than any other municipality in the province in the post-war period.
On December 6, 1990 , a military plane crashed on the technical secondary school Gaetano Salvemini . 12 students were killed and 88 injured. The pilot had left the machine before and survived. In 1998 he was acquitted.
