San Lazzaro di Savena is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Bologna with 32,792 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

The municipality of San Lazzaro di Savena is on State Road 9 (the ancient Via Emilia ), six kilometers southeast of Bologna city center . The area of the municipality extends to the lowlands and at the foot of the hills of the province. San Lazzaro di Savena is only separated from the urban fabric of the provincial capital, Bologna, by the Savena River, on the left bank of which the eponymous district of Bologna begins.

The Zena , Idice and Savena rivers , after which San Lazzaro di Savena got part of its name, flow through the municipality.

In the area of the municipality are the Grotta della Spipola ("Grotto of the Spipola") with its sinkhole as well as the gypsum outcrops of the districts Farneto and Croara, which create an extremely interesting karstification (there are about 50 interconnected by an even six kilometers long underground river connected caves and natural cavities), protected by the Parco Naturale dei Gessi Bolognesi e Calanchi dell'Abbadessa (Natural Park of the Plaster of Paris and the ridges of the Abbadessa).

history

The area was already inhabited in ancient times. There are numerous other finds that date from the Bronze Age . Together with the nearby Castenaso , San Lazzaro di Savena witnessed the flourishing Villanova culture . In San Lazzaro the Prehistoric Museum “Luigi Donini” was recently opened, which brings together various remarkable finds from ancient times.

A document proves that an epidemic station had existed since 1214, which, as was customary at that time, was located outside the city to isolate the sick and limit epidemics.

Later the village developed around the church and the hospital and became an independent village in the time of Napoleon I (1810). The community was later annexed by Bologna again; from 1872 it was independent again (also with the help of Carlo Berti Pichat ). Today, after the expansion of the construction industry in the 1970s, San Lazzaro is one of the most densely populated municipalities in the province of Bologna and has a large industrial area.
