The Savena is an Italian intermittent flowing water (catchment area approx. 175 km²), which near Firenzuola , in the metropolitan city of Florence, consists of a wide gorge towering over many mountains ( Sasso di Castro - 1276 m; Monte Bastione 1190 m, Monte Luario 1140 m, Monte Freddi 1275 m) rises just north of the Futapass ; It is the richest tributary of the Idice , to which it contributes at least 2/3 of the water, especially in summer, which in turn flows into the Reno . The Reno and the Savena delimit the municipality of Bologna to the north and south.
Word origin
A note on the vocabulary: the running stress of the word falls on the third from last syllable: Sàvena (practically only the Bolognese pronounce it correctly right away). Apart from the meaning of the Etruscan word Sàvena (literally: "watercourse"), the well-known poet Dante Alighieri referred to the Bolognese as those who inhabit the land between Reno and Savena as early as the 13th century .
“ E non pur io qui piango bolognese
anzi n'è questo luogo tanto pieno,
che tante lingue non son ora apprese
a dicer 'sipa' tra Sàvena e Reno;
e se di ciò vuoi fede o testimonio,
rècati a mente il nostro avaro seno. "
The watercourse
A few kilometers after its source, the Savena enters the metropolitan city of Bologna and cuts a fairly narrow and straight valley with steep walls, runs through Pianoro and through the south-eastern area of Bologna . Today its course in the Idice stream ends at San Lazzaro di Savena , about 55 km from the source. Its average flow velocity is approx. 6 m³ / s, its lowest however 0.3 m³ / s, during high tide it can even reach 150 m³ / s, but in severe floods (once every 100 years) there are also 400 m³ / s or to achieve more, as was the case in the flood of November 4, 1966, when the rivers flooded at Rastignano and San Ruffillo.
