The Futapass (Italian Passo della Futa ) crosses the Apennines in the municipality of Firenzuola ( Metropolitan City of Florence ) at an altitude of 903 meters.
geography
The mountain pass lies between the Sieve valley in the Mugello near Barberino di Mugello and the Santerno valley , an important tributary of the Reno , which rises near the Futaberg and reaches Firenzuola in the metropolitan city of Bologna . The Strada Statale 65 , which runs over the Futapass, connects the cities of Florence and Bologna . At the time of the Roman Empire , the Via Flaminia (also called Via Flaminia militare or Via Flaminia minor ) led over the pass. To the northeast of the Futa Pass is the Passo della Raticosa (Firenzuola), to the southeast of the Passo del Giogo (border between Firenzuola and Scarperia e San Piero ).
history
During the Second World War , the Germans built important fortifications of the Goths in the area of the pass . During the attack by the 5th US Army on September 12, 1944, the pass was bypassed and the Passo del Giogo , located to the southeast, was attacked instead .
In the 1950s, the German military cemetery Futapass was created directly on the pass . With 30,683 dead, it is the largest German military cemetery in Italy.
Sports
The Futapass has been part of the legendary Mille Miglia car race since it was first held in 1927 . The pass was also used between 1937 and 1956 in the Milan – Taranto long-distance motorcycle races . The Giro d'Italia cycle race led across the mountain pass several times, such as the Giro d'Italia 1934 (13th stage) or the Giro d'Italia 2007 (8th stage).
The athletes Clemente Biondetti (racing car driver), Gastone Nencini (racing cyclist) and Giulio Masetti (racing car driver) are dedicated to three memorial plaques on the Futapass. The plaque of Gastone Nencini was created on June 13, 1981, that of Giulio Masetti on June 3, 1928. It was attached by the Fasci di combattimento from Firenzuola and Pietramala.
