Gastone Nencini (born March 1, 1930 in Barberino di Mugello , † February 1, 1980 in Florence ) was an Italian racing cyclist .

Career

In 1954 he became a professional and finished 16th at his first start at the Giro d'Italia , but in 1955 he came in 3rd place overall. At the road world championship in the heat battle of Rome in 1955 he was fourth. Two years later, in 1957 , he finished the Giro d'Italia as a superior winner, finishing fifth in 1958 and tenth in 1959 . He had his best year in 1960 when he was 2nd in the Giro d'Italia in 1960 and 1st in the overall classification of the 1960 Tour de France . He won four stages in the Tour de France and seven in the Giro d'Italia. The Mugello Lion , as Nencini was called, was a very good climber. He's also considered one of the best downhill riders in cycling history.

In 1961 he achieved the last of a total of 24 victories as a professional driver and was able to place himself in the top of the world once again with 8th place at the road world championship. In 1962 he finished 13th at the Giro d'Italia and was eliminated in 1963 and 1964, respectively. In 1965, Nencini ended his career at the age of 35.
