Jean Brankart (born July 12, 1930 in Momalle ; † July 23, 2020 ) was a Belgian cyclist who was active on track and road .

In 1952 Jean Brankart won the Ster von Namen races and the Tour of Belgium in the independent competition.

From 1953 to 1960 Brankart was a professional cyclist. During these years he started six times in the Tour de France . In 1955 he finished second in the overall ranking, recorded two stage wins and finished third in the mountain ranking . In 1954 he was ninth, in 1959 tenth and in 1959 he finished 39th. He gave up twice during the tour.

Brankart also took second place in the overall standings at the Giro d'Italia in 1958 , where he also won the mountain classification. In 1958 he was also seventh overall.

Other successes of Jean Brankart were winning a stage of the Tour de Suisse in 1955 , third place at Liège – Bastogne – Liège in the same year and victory at the Grand Prix Midi Libre in 1959. In 1955 he was also third in the annual Challenge Desgrange- Colombo 's most successful cyclist.

On the track, Jean Brankart was three times - in 1956, 1958 and 1959 - Belgian champion in the single pursuit . At the UCI track world championships in 1959 he won bronze in this discipline. He also started eight six-day races and finished second twice with Stan Ockers in Brussels .

In 1960, Brankart gave up the Tour de France during the first stage. A medical examination revealed heart problems, which is why he had to end his cycling career immediately.

The Club Cyclo Momalle has been organizing the Jean Brankart Classic for everyone since 1999 .
