Matthew Lloyd (born May 24, 1983 in Melbourne ) is an Australian cyclist .

Athletic career

Matthew Lloyd won a stage of the Herald Sun Tour in Australia in 2004 . A few months later he won a stage in the Tour of Wellington and also won the overall standings. As a result, he placed fourth in the final ranking of the UCI Oceania Tour 2005 .

In 2006 Lloyd drove for the Continental Team SouthAustralia.com-AIS , for which he won a stage in the Tour of Japan and later in the Herald Sun Tour . From the 2007 season, Lloyd started for the Belgian ProTour team Predictor-Lotto . In 2008, he started the road race at the Olympic Games in Beijing and finished 30th.

In 2009, Lloyd was seriously injured in the Amstel Gold Race . At the Giro d'Italia 2010 , Lloyd achieved not only a stage win, but also the final victory in the mountain classification. In 2010 he suffered further injuries, including a broken shoulder when he was about to drive to the bank after a training drive and had an accident. The exact circumstances remained unclear, and Lloyd could not remember anything.

On April 15, 2011, his Omega Pharma-Lotto team interrupted their collaboration with Lloyd due to "personal differences". Lloyd later stated in an interview that the team leadership had asked him to do the Tour of Catalonia , even though he did not feel physically able to do so. Therefore, he rejected this start.

In 2013, Matthew Lloyd took a long break from racing to do rehabilitation after suffering from prolonged back problems. In 2014 he ended his cycling career.
