Alby Barlow came from a family with 20 children. He was a professional racing driver from 1938 to 1948. In 1947 he won the 100 Mile Classic at Mount Gambier with a new record of 4:30 hours, and the following year he was Australian road racing champion. He also held the Australian records for 25, 60 and 100 miles.
In 1947 Barlow traveled to Europe at his own expense to take part in the World Championships in Valkenburg , but realized that as an individual Australian he would have little chance against the well-equipped European teams. After a serious fall in training, he returned to Australia without starting the World Cup.
