De Vere (family)
The de Vere family originally came from Ver-sur-Mer in Normandy and came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066 . Their ancestral home was Hedingham Castle in Essex .
In 1142, Aubrey III. de Vere appointed first Earl of Oxford by Empress Matilda . The title remained in the family until the death of Aubrey de Vere, 20th Earl of Oxford in 1703.
