John beasley sr. (Born July 13, 1930 in Melbourne ; † January 31, 2017 ) was an Australian cyclist .
Athletic career
John Beasley turned pro in 1947 . In 1950 and 1952 he won the Melbourne- Wangaratta race and in 1950 the 150-mile championship in Victoria . In 1951 he won the Australian road racing championship and the Tour of the West .
In 1952, Beasley traveled to Europe with Australian drivers Eddie Smith , Dean Whitehorn and Peter Anthony . There he finished 28th in Paris – Nice , whereupon he was the only one of the four to participate in the 1952 Tour de France as a member of the Luxembourg team . After a flat tire and subsequent falls, he exceeded the time limit and was taken out of the classification after the second stage. Three years later he started again for the Luxembourg team in the Tour , this time together with his compatriot Russell Mockridge , but had to end the race after the third stage due to an upset stomach. In 2017 he was the oldest living Tour de France participant in Australia. In 1952 and 1955 he took part in the road world championships.
After his return to Australia, Beasley only competed a few races in his home country and mainly took care of his bike business. For many years he served as a mechanic for the Australian national team , most recently at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles .
Family and work
John Beasley came from a cycling family. Even his father JJ Beasley was a well-known cyclist in Australia in the 1920s. In 1919 he founded the Beasley Cycles bicycle shop in Richmond , which is still run by the family in Footscray . John's brothers, Vin and Clinton, were also racing cyclists.
Beasley's son, John Beasley Jr., now runs the family business and is also the coach of the Malaysian national rail team , which achieved world class under him (as of 2018) .
