Richmond is a district of Melbourne , Victoria , Australia . It is located about 3 km southeast of the city center and is in the City of Yarra Administrative Region (LGA) . At the last census in 2011, the population was 23,814.
The multi-faceted district was gentrified in the early 1990s, with the result that it now consists of a colorful mix of different building types, in addition to expensive converted residences in former warehouses, there are social housing, in between high-rise buildings and Victorian terraced houses . There is a lively retail sector within the city , although the industrial and craft base is shrinking. Richmond is known for the lively and popular Little Saigon along Victoria Street. This part of Melbourne gained historical importance through the textile industry, today only the numerous factory outlets along Bridge Road remind of it .
The name Richmond is derived from Richmond Hill , a hill in London with a view of the Thames reminiscent of Richmond's view of the Yarra River . The area along the river was later called Cremorne .
